What to Expect When You See an Emergency Dentist

Dental Care Service utilization rates were measured by self reported frequency of having visited a family dentist in the past 2 years. Respondents also indicated the frequency of use and types of services sought. Frequencies and types of services ranged from having only simple cleanings, or certain specific dental procedures, to more complicated treatments such as root canals and fillings. Respondents were also asked if they had ever been recommended to see a family dentist or if they were using one for themselves. It should be noted that dental health is very important and that brushing and flossing regularly can prevent disease and decay.

A sample of dental care service requests was categorized into two types: routine and severe pain/discomfort, and no matter what/when it hurts. Respondents who indicated they had at least one toothache in the last two months and those with severe pain showed significantly lower usage than those without severe pain. Those who indicated they had at least one toothache but were not requesting an emergency dentist stamford had similar results to those without pain: they had about the same frequency of use (but not the same number of procedures or types of services), but significantly lower frequency of use for tooth extraction.

From these results, we can estimate what types of dental procedures/services people require on a daily basis and under what circumstances, if any, someone might need a dental emergency. The results did show a significant distinction between those seeking emergency care and those needing routine maintenance. Of course, tooth decay, disease of the gum and periodontal diseases require immediate professional attention. Those with gum disease were much more likely to have both a toothache and a need for a dental visit, while those without needed visits or tooth decay had almost no difference in frequency of dentist visits or tooth decay severity. Thus it appears that routine dentistry for tooth decay sufferers does not always translate into tooth loss or tooth pain or other oral conditions requiring immediate professional attention. Beyond tooth decay and oral diseases, researchers believe that stress, anxiety and depression are factors that lead to increased instances of urgent dental care, as well as tooth loss or tooth pain. For example, dental emergencies resulting from jaw pain or fractured teeth may warrant dental care immediately, because the patient is experiencing pain that makes it difficult to open one's mouth. However, those who experience anxiety or depression may not show such a difference in the frequency or severity of their dental emergencies. They could just be nervous and stressed enough to require some extra attention.

Clearly, there are different requirements for dentists depending on their patients' needs. If a patient experiences bleeding gums or painful teeth, he or she should see a doctor right away, even if tooth pain is not evident. However, a person with normal or above-average teeth may not require an urgent dental care call if he or she had healthy teeth. This is likely because the chances of a tooth emergency are slim.

Regardless of a patient's dental situation, knowing what to expect beforehand can help alleviate some of the stress involved with dental visits. In the case of an emergency, patients can rest assured that a qualified emergency dentist is on hand. However, he or she will most likely arrive after office hours, which can mean arriving in a short amount of time. This gives patients time to prepare themselves for a long-awaited dentist visit and dentist appointment, instead of stressing about whether or not their tooth pain will be treated in time to avoid additional dental work.
